What the SEND Tribunal is
The SEND Tribunal is an independent panel that listens when you disagree with a decision your council has made about your child's support. It is not part of the council, which is the whole point. It exists to look at your case fairly and on its own. You might go there if the council refuses to assess your child, refuses to give a plan, or writes a plan you do not think is good enough. Most families who appeal go without a lawyer, and many succeed.
When and how to appeal
When the council says no, they must send you a letter explaining the decision and your right to appeal. You usually have two months from the date of that letter to start, so do not leave it to the last minute. Before you appeal, in many cases you first try a quick, free step called mediation, which is simply a conversation to see if things can be sorted without the tribunal. If that does not work, you register your appeal online or by post.
How to prepare your case
Preparation calms the nerves. Gather your evidence in one folder: the council's decision letter, school reports, letters from doctors or therapists, and your own notes from home. Then write a short, clear statement of what you want and why. Stick to facts and examples rather than feelings alone.
